Not all of the forest’s beauty is visible — some dwell quietly among twisted branches and sandy soil. Such is the case of Chico’s Tyrannulet (Zimmerius chicomendesi), a small and rare bird found in the Amazon’s campinarana, one of Brazil’s most fragile and threatened ecosystems.

Chico’s Tyrannulet is a frugivorous, quiet bird with selective habitat preferences. It lives in nutrient-poor soils, where vegetation takes years to recover after deforestation. And it’s precisely this dependence on campinarana ecosystems that puts it at risk: expanding agriculture and wildfires have been destroying its home before we’ve had the chance to fully understand it.

The Terra da Gente report is both a warning and a celebration — of science, biodiversity, and the memory of those who fought to protect it.
