A groundbreaking scientific expedition reveals the tourism potential of Pacaás Novos National Park (RO)

Between May 28 and June 4, 2025, a multidisciplinary team composed of ICMBio and Funai staff, researchers, and Indigenous representatives carried out a groundbreaking expedition to Pico do Tracoá — the highest point in Rondônia, located within Pacaás Novos National Park. The goal was to assess the region’s potential for birdwatching tourism.

During the expedition, three bird survey methods were applied, resulting in the recording of nearly 100 species — including migratory birds and those native to the Amazon. The study added 25 new species to the park’s checklist, which now includes around 390 documented birds.

The initiative reinforces the ecological and tourism value of the region, home to unique environments such as rocky grasslands and igarapé forests. One of the highlights was the sighting of the hooded siskin (Spinus magellanicus), a species native to southern Brazil and the Andes, found in an isolated population on the plateau.
